Consell asks Red Eléctrica de España to halt works on Es Ca Marí road and reopen traffic

The Consell de Formentera has informed Red Eléctrica de España (REE) that on Sunday 1 May, it must interrupt work of the third electric cable on the Es Ca Marí road. The work, which began in October and was to meant be completed by 30 April, has suffered delays in recent months due to weather conditions and the lack of materials due to global distribution problems.

With the approaching start of the tourist season, the Consell de Formentera has informed Red Eléctrica de España that it must stop operations entailing traffic closures on the road to Es Ca Marí. They can be restarted from 15 October. The Consell has requested that, from Sunday 1 May, no new work be started and that, as soon as possible, ditches in the road be filled in and the normal flow of traffic be restored. Formentera Local Police will monitor compliance with this order.

The Consell is also asking REE to resurface the affected road as soon as possible. Delays in recent months have been due to adverse weather conditions. Traffic will not be cut off as work continues, but the flow of vehicles will be regulated to minimise inconveniences.

According to REE, work on the third cable, which will connect the Torrent substation on Eivissa with the Es Ca Marí substation on Formentera, will involve deploying two 132 kilovolt (kV) links and mean the island can source its energy safely and sustainably. The infrastructure will cost €96 million.

Formentera's art and craft markets prepare to start the new season with pre-pandemic normality

The Formentera Office of Commerce is pleased to report that Sunday 1 May, art and craft markets on the island will begin opening for the 2022 season. Activity begins in the markets of La Mola, Sant Francesc and Es Pujols on 1 May; the market in La Savina opens 16 May and the craft and art markets of Sant Ferran starts 28 May.

Ana Juan, President and Councillor of Commerce, hailed the return to normal and lifting of capacity restrictions at the markets in 2022, something she described as "good news for Formentera artisans, one of the many communities that needs for things to get back to normal; for islanders, who enjoy the markets too; and for tourists, who appreciate the markets as part of what makes Formentera unique".

For two years, COVID-19 restrictions prevented the normal functioning of the markets and the Consell de Formentera subsidised one hundred per cent of the fees that vendors pay to conduct business on public land under municipal jurisdiction.

Hours will be the same as before the pandemic:

Mercat artesà de la Mola. Wednesdays and Sundays, 4.30pm to 10.00pm. From 1 May to 12 October.
Mercat de Sant Francesc. Monday to Sunday, 10.00am to 2.00pm. From 1 May to 30 October.
Mercat de la Savina. Monday to Sunday, 11.00am to 2.00pm and 5.00pm to 12 midnight. From 16 May to 30 September.
Mercat des Pujols. Monday to Sunday, 7.00pm to midnight. From 1 May to 30 October.
Mercat artístic i artesà de Sant Ferran. Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 8.00pm to 12 midnight. From 28 May to 1 October.

Formentera hosts island councils for Sports Coordination Conference

foto 2022 jornades coordinacio esportiva AToday Paula Ferrer, Councillor of Sports of the Consell de Formentera, welcomed representatives of neighbouring island councils to the Sports Coordination Conference, a two-day event continues tomorrow at the Nautical Sports Centre of Formentera. The purpose of these conferences, said Councillor Ferrer, is to enhance coordination between the different island administrations. She also emphasised the importance of "sharing information about initiatives under way, taking into account the peculiarities of each island, with the ultimate goal of providing a better service to citizens and our athletes".

Nearly 1,300 participants in sporting events in April alone

One point of discussion at this conference is local sports fixtures, which are about sports and tourism alike. In the presentation, Councillor Ferrer said that seven April sporting events co-sponsored by the Consell ran the gamut from athletics (FART and Charity Race) and cycling (Road Cycling Trophy and Volta Cicloturista) to judo (Easter Week stage) and windsurfing (national Catalan catamaran championship and the Ophiusa Regatta), with about 1,300 participants and companions.

The Sports Coordination Conference will deal with other topics, too, like municipal sports management, the importance of sports service companies and elite clubs, and school sports.
