Consell to lower pontoon footbridge and review options at Estany des Peix

foto 2022v passarellaAna Juan, President of the Consell de Formentera, Antoni Tur, Councillor of Environment, and the director of work Pablo Quesada, have signalled that this week the pontoon footbridge at S'Estany des Peix will be lowered to reduce the visual impact of the structure. Further, the Consell has indicated that it is working with Tragsatec, which is overseeing the project, and the company that installed the footbridge on possible alternatives to the current structure.

"The visual impact of the footbridge is tremendous and this is unacceptable, for both Formentera and Estany des Peix", said President Juan. She defended the basic project which was presented in 2018 by the Balearic Ministry of Environment and endorsed by all the administrations involved in this natural site. "This visual impact must now be reduced while also taking into account the safety of the users who must use the facilities", she said, and pointed out that "we are working towards rewilding Estany des Peix and recovering the traditional and natural uses that we want for this protected area".

Councillor Tur asserted that the footbridge would be lowered "as much as possible, while still factoring for safety and imperative of integrating the structure into the surrounding area". He pointed out that this change does not mean delaying enactment of the new regulatory scheme at Estany des Peix. "We are seeking a sustainable solution which strikes a balance between the impact on the landscape and the safety of those using the footbridge", he said.

While the pontoons and ecological buoys were installed, about 400 dead weights and more than 300 kilos of garbage were removed from the bottom of S'Estany des Peix.

Formentera residents must be accredited to drive on local roads during formentera.eco enforcement

foto 2022v formenteraecoThe Formentera Office of Mobility reports that 7,505 resident vehicles whose owners hold valid blue zone parking accreditation or have paid the island's road tax were automatically cleared to access, drive and park on the island during the enforcement of formentera.eco from 15 June to 15 September.

Motorists can see if their vehicle has been cleared by logging their plate number in a section of www.formentera.eco. Individuals do not meet the above requirements can request accreditation simply on the same website. Trucks, high-capacity vans, tractors or trailers must also have a valid accreditation to be driven on the island. Accreditation is free of charge for residents.

In the days ahead the Consell will launch a communication campaign to make sure that local motorists either have the accreditation already or request it now. Formentera.eco rules will be enforced by local law enforcement and parking attendants and with license plate reading cameras, both mobile and fixed, that will be installed throughout the island.

New rates take effect for formentera.eco

foto 2022v for ecoThe Formentera Office of Mobility reports that new rates for authorisation to bring, drive and park cars and motorcycles on Formentera during the 2022 enforcement period of formentera.eco, 15 June to 15 September, both inclusive, have now taken effect.

Visitors bringing vehicles to the island can obtain accreditation in a few simple steps on www.formentera.eco. The daily rate for cars is €3, with a minimum payment of €15; for motorcycles and motor scooters it is €1.50/day and €7.50 minimum. "This year we have tripled the fee compared to last summer. Between this, and the minimum day-tripper rate of €15, we have managed to deter single-day visitors from saturating Formentera roads in the high season", explained Rafael González, Councillor of Mobility.

Residents pay no charge for accreditation, but must sign up on the website. Cars authorised for blue zone parking and private vehicles of residents who pay the local road tax will be automatically accredited. Drivers must enter their vehicle plate number on www.formentera.eco to determine whether the accreditation has been properly secured. In the days ahead the Consell will launch a communication campaign encouraging Formentera residents to register their vehicles and obtain accreditation.

Hybrid vehicles are eligible for a 50% discount, electric vehicles 100%, and residents of Eivissa, Mallorca and Menorca have free accreditation.
