Firefighter training

foto 2019 curs bombers 3The interior department of the Consell de Formentera reports that local firefighters and Civil Protection volunteers recently took part in a course at the island training facility on rope access and urgent care.

Piloted by Emergency Staff SL, the programme was made up of various theory-based and hands-on workshops. Participants performed victim immobilisation exercises with an array of instruments, not to mention emergency medical response protocol for wounds, haemorrhages and burns. Students assembled headboards and performed rappel in urban settings. They also reviewed strategies for rescues performed in wells, mounted zip lines, learned safe practices with extension and hook ladders and practiced evacuating victims using ladders in urban environments.

All told, eight firefighters and four Civil Protection volunteers.

Consell de Formentera invites personnel to raise glasses for Christmas

foto-2019-brindis-1Consell de Formentera president Alejandra Ferrer and the entire governing team invited the administration workforce to join them in celebrating a holiday tradition by raising their glasses for a Christmas toast. Ferrer called it “an extra special moment”, noting the Yuletide reception was her first since taking office as president.

Ferrer took the opportunity to applaud the daily efforts of Consell personnel “who work hard to guarantee premium public services for islanders”. She underscored expansion of the labour force since the Consell de Formentera was created 12 years ago, saying such growth “and the efforts of the women and men who make up our team” were “crucial to maintaining new services that have come along the way”.

“This Consell exists to better the lives of Formentera residents”, she said. “To make an island that is people-focused and sustainable—and that’s something we couldn’t do without the daily toil of personnel”.

Students of culinary, gastronomical and catering job training programmes, not to mention those in basic vocational training at Marc Ferrer High School, offered drinks and appetizers.

Assembly members green-light 2020 spending

foto-ple-desembre-2019j1Councillors convened today for the December plenary of the Consell de Formentera, a session that brought approval for the local government’s spending projections for 2020. Tax office councillor Bartomeu Escandell called the €30.6-million budget “a statement in defence of stable spending; we’re putting out only as much as we’re taking in, and keeping debt at zero”.

The tax office chief said €1.5m for local associations were intended to “improve islanders’ quality of life”. “This is an administration that believes in bringing people to the table, giving associations positions of prominence and looking after not only the island’s elderly and youth, but our language and traditions as well”.

Escandell said one thing not to expect from the new budget was tax increases, and he described fiscal fairness as “one of the top priorities”. “We’re certainly not turning our backs on our young ones and elderly, either”, he insisted, holding up €1.1m for the Sant Ferran nursery and €700K to complete the home for aged. As for the island’s underprivileged, Escandell held up a line item allocating money in the form of renters’ assistance for victims of gender violence.

Country and heritage
Escandell also highlighted plans to continue supporting local agriculture by increasing funding for joint initiatives with the local Farmers’ Co-op from €115K to €130K. As for heritage spending, he emphasised €250K to rehabilitate catalogued sites and drystone walls and bury overhead utility cables.

Upgrades are in the works in Es Pujols, too, where plans are currently in place to prepare and phase in part two of the downtown-area improvements. Additional urban-service upgrades are also scheduled in Es Ca Marí. Other planned projects will entail reorganising and regulating moorage at Estany des Peix, continuing to restrict the in-bound flow of vehicles and improving public transport. More improvements are in store in Sant Ferran, as well, where residents will see a new children’s park opened and the second phase of upgrades begin on Avinguda Joan Castelló i Guasch. In Sant Francesc, there will be a new skatepark, and improvements in the eastern part of town.

Opposition
Spending plans for 2020 passed amid “yes” votes from the GxF-PSOE governing team and the abstention of Sa Unió. Party spokesman Llorenç Córdoba claimed exclusion from the drafting process motivated the group’s decision, while asserting the move should be interpreted “a vote of confidence for the new governing coalition”.

Improvements in La Mola
The governing team lent support to Sa Unió representatives’ proposed improvements on Carrer Àngela Ferrer in La Mola, where the undergrounding of utility cables is still pending on that road and on the town’s central arterial. Assembly members underscored the efforts already made by the local government—installing conduit, for instance—to make further upgrades possible. The motion involved encouraging the Consell de Formentera to “continue calling on local service providers like Telefónica and GESA that currently use overhead lines on Carrer Àngela Ferrer and Avinguda de La Mola to take charge of their burial”.

New technologies councillor Vanessa Parellada explained the administration’s support for the measure by pointing out that, after a more nuanced description of work performed to date and modifications in collaborative agreements had been successfully secured, “the proposal reflects work by the Consell de Formentera and supports further progress in the same direction—i.e. to preserve the local landscape by keeping new aerial cables from going up, and burying those that are already in place”.

Notary oversees drawing to select runners in 12th Formentera Half-Marathon and 8K fun run

foto 2019 mini maratoFormentera’s department of sport reports that a drawing to determine participants in the 12th Half-Marathon and 8K Run on 16 May 2020 was overseen today by island notary Javier González Granado.

Councillor of sport Paula Ferrer highlighted the 5,623 runners who had signed up for a chance to compete, and said she was thrilled to the runs becoming “big-name events on the national calendar of popular sporting events”, conceding: “It’s a sign we’re doing things right”.

A randomised drawing determined which participants would fill 2,200 spots in the Formentera Mitja Marató and half that number in the 8K Cursa. Half-Marathon runners with numbers from 1,117 to 3,316 (both inclusive) were selected from the randomly generated figure of 1,117. For the 8K run, counting up from the random figure 9,657 gave organisers a slice that cut all the way to the end of the list (9,979) and picked up the next 777 names from 8,001.

Runners must confirm participation between 20 December and 13 January. Should spots remain unclaimed at the end of that period, organisers will pick up from where both of the original drawings left off in order to determine additional participants. An initial redrawing is tentatively scheduled from 15-20 January, a second from the 22nd to 27th, and a third from 29 January to 3 February.

Ferry companies to offer early-bird and evening connection with Eivissa

foto-rp-marcpons-alejandraferr1Formentera president Alejandra Ferrer held a press conference today in Palma with two Balearic government officials—Marc Pons, head of the mobility and housing ministry, and Xavier Ramis, director general of the ports and airports section—to announce a deal to assure ferry service to Eivissa first thing in the morning, and back again late in the evening.

Baleària will offer 6.00am service to Eivissa from Monday to Friday, and Transmapi pledges to maintain the 10.30pm return passage every day of the week. Mr Pons indicated the service would begin no later than 1 March and, in order to expedite the service rollout, that it wouldn’t be put to public tender.

The Consell de Formentera president highlighted the collaboration with the Govern balear that had gone into securing a connection so crucial for Formentera residents. “For many islanders who travel to Eivissa to study, these passages mean no longer having to move. For people with a loved one in the hospital, it means longer visiting hours. It means that everyone can make the first and last flights off Eivissa. And these are just some of the quality of life improvements it represents for everyday residents”.

Ferrer also insisted that, at the local government level, efforts would continue to focus on including minimum ferry service and fixed passage times in recent regulation known as the “Maritime Transport Decree” (decret de Transport Marítim). “We’d like to see a set number of daily journeys, not only to make sure this is a service islanders can count on, but also to guarantee—since these ships are sailing through the natural reserve—that the service is environmentally sustainable”. She concluded by highlighting “the good the ferry companies had come to the table with in order to work out a deal”.
