Seven students complete Consell de Formentera course on social and cultural integration for foreigners

foto 2020 cursYesterday was the last day of class for seven students in the Formentera Social Welfare Department’s course on social and cultural integration held this November at Formentera’s adult learning centre. Students in the course hailed from Argentina, Colombia, Morocco and Mexico.

After sitting for the last session, social welfare councillor Rafael Ramírez applauded participants’ effort and interest and pointed out that certificates of completion issued by the Balearic Islands would be valid as preparation for the CCSE citizenship test or to demonstrate integration during the early phases of a stay in Spain.

Class size was limited this year to accommodate Covid-19 safety protocol. The course was led by Dolores Fernández Tamargo and covered topics including Spanish constitutional values, human rights and civil liberties, the Balearic Statute of Autonomy, the European Union and gender equality, among others.

On International Day of People with Disabilities, ‘Cultivating values’ aims at awareness

foto 2020 dia discapacitatsThe Formentera Social Welfare Department has put together an assortment of activities to educate islanders around this year’s International Day of People with Disabilities, 3 December. At one awareness-building event, local associations bringing together islanders with disabilities will plant trees in the garden of the adult day care centre.

Social welfare councillor Rafael Ramírez praised the associations’ members for their involvement and commitment, saying the work “is key to building visibility and promoting integration”. Ramírez highlighted the Consell de Formentera’s work to meet the needs of people with disabilities, calling guaranteeing every person’s rights “critical” and encouraging islanders to take part in the events.

Collaborators in the programme include the Eivissa-Formentera Association of People with Special Needs (Apneef); Pau Mayans Association for the Integration of People on the Autism Spectrum (Apmitea); the local chapter of the Spanish Cancer Association (Formentera-AECC); the local support group for chemical sensitivity, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia and other conditions; the Eivissa-Formentera Group for Advanced Capacities and Talents (ACTEF) and the Pine Islands Group for Social and Educational Inclusion (APIES).

“A sweeping programme of education and political engagement to tackle gender violence was crucial”, said Ferrer, “especially this year, given the violence so many women have faced and continue to face as a result of the Covid-19 crisis and the increased time at home with their aggressors”. 25 November
The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women begins at 11.00am with an information stand in Sant Francesc’s Plaça de la Constitució where visitors can help make and hang signs.

Entertainment starts at 4.30pm with Bloco Colubraria’s batucada drum performance, followed by a 5.00pm rally with Covid-19 protocol in place. Women may volunteer to share written work. A reading will then be given of the manifesto, with a representation of Chilean group LASTESIS’ “The Rapist in Your Path”.

Equality director Vanessa Parellada indicated that Covid-19 sanitary measures would be in place at every activity, and highlighted a crosscutting organising approach that included Espai Dones and numerous departments of the Consell de Formentera—“because we need to tackle gender violence on as many fronts as possible”. Finally, Parellada asked islanders to be vigilant and take action if they see gender violence: “It’s not a personal problem and it’s not a family problem. It’s a social problem, so looking away isn’t going to work. We need everyone to take an active role”, she said.

Consell unveils latest round of social and cultural integration course for immigrants

cartell 2020 curs integracioThe Formentera Department of Social Welfare reports that open enrolment runs today through 30 October for the fourteenth round of a free course seeking to promote the social and cultural integration of participating students. The Balearic government offers those who successfully complete the course a report accrediting their ambition to integrate, and instruction is tailored to help individuals who are preparing for the CCSE citizenship test. Encouraging local immigrants to take part, department chief Rafael Ramírez trumpeted the course as "a double boost to participants, helping them integrate in society and stay on the right side of administrative paperwork”.

Public health imperatives mean class size will go from 15 to 12, and spaces will be awarded by order of enrolment. Individuals interested in signing up should inquire at the social welfare office during regular office hours, 9.00am to 2.00pm. A valid ID (temporary residence card or passport) is required for registration.

The course will be conducted over 20 hours in two weekly sessions, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4.30 to 7.00pm, and will be held in the large classroom of the Escola d’Adults.

Instructor Dolores Fernández Tamargo will cover topics including Spain’s constitutional values, human rights and civil liberties, the Balearic Statute of Autonomy, the European Union and gender equality, among others.
