40 Formentera business owners take interest in strategic tourism sectors

reunio---set premsa1Today at 11.00am in the Formentera Council's Sala d'Actes, an information session was offered on the island's segments estratègics turístics, or “strategic tourism sectors” (SET). Tourism councillor Alejandra Ferrer explained the idea of the session as harnessing public-private collaboration to power diversification and create products to make Formentera-based businesses more competitive. Forty some representatives of private sector firms attended the event.

Chairpersons from the eight regional SETs—gastronomy, culture, active tourism, ecotourism, fitness tourism, health and fitness, luxury and MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions)—gave presentations tracing their own experiences and encouraged local entrepreneurs to join the initiative.

Jaume Alzamora, managing director of the Balearic Agència Estratègia Turística, said that in 2019 the agency would contribute nearly three million across projects in management, supply support, destination improvement, taking product to market, innovation and competitivity.

Another €1.2 million from the Sustainable Tourism Levy has been earmarked for a project (the terms will be hammered out between the islands) to encompass promotional initiatives aimed at fuelling demand.

Participating local firms will have say in how the money is used and can make proposals on competitivity hacks, plus will have a hand in crafting the tourism activities and events programme.

At London Marathon expo, Formentera touts credentials as sports destination

for-esport premsa1From today, Wednesday April 24, to Saturday, representatives of the Formentera Council's office of tourism will be at the Excel centre (already familiar to attendees of November's World Travel Market) to promote the island at the London Marathon expo. The expo will wind down just in time for the London Marathon to play out on the streets of the UK capital.

Head of local tourism Carlos Bernús described it as “a red-letter event in fitness circles” and said “Formentera at the London Marathon expo just made sense: more and more, Formentera is positioning as a one of a kind backdrop for sporting fixtures”.

Formentera will share a space at the expo with the other Balearic Islands at the region's “Strategic Agency for Tourism”, or AETIB. Bernús indicated that reps would be pushing a freshly printed catalogue detailing the major sporting events which are scheduled on the island at the beginning and end of the summer season.

Also translated into English, the catalogue gives an overview of the 14 premier sports- and fitness-related events (the total number is approximately thirty) geared towards “drawing a brand of tourism that respects our natural surroundings and environment and turning Formentera to a place for fitness—for visitors and islanders alike”.

The promotional initiative was requested by the sports wing of the “Strategic Sectors in Tourism” (SET).

senderismo moonkoala-1-The Formentera Council tourism department reports that today through Sunday March 31 island representatives will be promoting Formentera at San Sebastián's SEVATUR travel expo. Formentera has its own stand at the expo, with information about outdoor activities for families even after the traditional summer season.
