New blue-green zone parking app lets drivers go paperless and protect the environment

foto 2021 aparca sense paperNew blue-green zone parking app lets drivers go paperless and protect the environment
Consell de Formentera premiere Alejandra Ferrer and mobility chief Rafael González gave a press conference today to present a new app that allows motorists to add time for metred “blue and green zone” parking directly on their phones.

“We want islanders to take to the new app because of the built-in environmental benefits of paperless parking”, confided Ferrer, “but it’s also a time-saver: motorists now no longer have to spend time printing parking passes”.

How it works
The free Flowbird Parking app can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play. Once the download is complete, submit your vehicle details into the app and go to a parking metre to enter your vehicle plate number. Rather than getting your parking pass from the metre, you’ll receive it on your mobile phone, where you can also set an alert to warn you when your time is almost up.

The mobility chief described the app’s three major benefits as forgoing printed passes, sparing drivers the trip back to their vehicle, and getting an alert when passes expire.

González said that people who preferred to do without the app would be able to get paper passes as they have done till now; the only difference is that now there’s no need to leave them in their vehicle.

Communications push
President Ferrer reminded islanders that the pay-to-park system started in La Savina in 2015 in response to that town’s parking crunch before gradually spreading to other towns.

The Consell has put together a video reminding drivers about the genesis of the local metred parking rollout and showing them all that’s new with the new app.

A tutorial on how to use Flowbird Parking has also been posted here., which can be seen here. Consell officials have hailed the collaboration of IB3, which supplied past images of the island to illustrate La Savina’s parking woes pre-blue zone.

Revamped website: zonablava.com
Details about the new paperless system are in Catalan, Spanish, English and Italian and can be found on the zonablava.com site. Tourists can use the app and pay by credit card. For Formentera residents, blue zone parking remains free of charge.

Promotional materials have been posted around the island, including at bus stop displays, and parking attendants carry explanatory brochures on hand.

Visitors to the website can also find information about vouchers which the Consell de Formentera makes available to urban tourist accommodations so guests can enjoy 25% off the cost of parking.

Checking parking authorisation
The zonablava.com website also features a section where you can enter your vehicle plate number and check whether your parking authorisations are in order and plan ahead by seeing in advance when they expire. Remember: renewals can be done online at the Virtual Citizen Information Office (OVAC) or in person and by appointment at the Citizen Information Office (OAC).

Tourists can pre-register for formentera.eco from 15 March

Formentera mobility department chief Rafael González announced today that Monday 15 March will mark the start of early registration for all those hoping to drive on the island between 24 June and 7 September 2021. From Monday, tourists can ‘pre-register’ online at no charge, with bookings becoming official when confirmation emails are sent out in May.

From the last week in June to the first in September, the total number of vehicles on local roads will be capped at 20,591 (four per cent fewer than in 2020). Individuals who drive a vehicle on the island during that period must first obtain a permit on the formentera.eco website.

“Permit request is simple and similar to that of any bookings website”, said González, telling motorists to expect to know by May whether the process would be fee-based or free as during last year’s Covid crisis. If fee-based, permits will cost €1.00 per day, with a five-day minimum; permits for motorcycles or motor scooters would cost half that, with the same five-day minimum.

Resident permits
Permits will be cost-free and guaranteed for Formentera residents already in possession of a “blue zone-green zone” metred parking pass. Motorists can ensure they have been cleared for summer driving by entering their vehicle plate number on the formentera.eco website; drivers not already cleared can apply for a free permit online.

Permits are guaranteed for travellers with bookings for overnight accommodations or arrangements to travel with a personal vehicle made before March.

15 days, 2,000 metred parking pass renewed

foto 2021 zona blavaThe Formentera Department of Mobility (FDM) reports that in the first half of February roughly two thousand local motorists renewed passes to leave vehicles in pay-to-park spots. Including renewals since summer, a total of four thousand islanders can now park in metred spots at no charge, said FDM chief Rafael González.

Until Monday 22 February, metre attendants’ top priority will be to remind motorists to renew “blue and green zone” passes if they wish to continue parking for free in the painted spots.

Renewals
Passes may be renewed on the OVAC by clicking on tràmits i gestions > llicències i permisos > Sol·licitud d'autorització / renovació d'autorització de zona blava – verda. Renewals can also be processed face to face at the Citizen’s Information Office (OAC). For additional inquiries, call the Consell at 971 32 10 87.

Formentera’s pay-to-park scheme was put on hold in March following declaration of emergency orders. The system was restored in July, but the Consell opted to extend free-parking rather than contend with a wave of summertime renewals overlapping with peak economic activity and parking demand. Automatic renewals ended at the start of February.

Formentera earmarks €35K for freelancers and other businesses specialised in land transport

foto 2021 transport terrestreMobility chief Rafael González took part today in a meeting of the Balearic Land Transport Council that was co-chaired by Francina Armengol and Balearic mobility and housing minister Josep Marí Ribas and attended by representatives of other island councils and business leaders.

The Consell de Formentera and Govern balear agreed at the encounter to put up €17,250 to assist businesses and freelancers that offer occasional carriage services by bus, specialise in ground merchandise transport, work as taxi drivers, or operate as rent-a-car companies.

“In these days of pandemia and tumult in the land transport sector, these subsidies are extremely necessary and we couldn’t be happier that they’ve received industry approval. Now the challenge is to ensure people can access these funds easily”, said González.

Getting Formentera up to speed on blue and green zone parking permit renewals

The Formentera Mobility Department reminds islanders that permits to park at no charge in spaces marked with blue or green must be renewed once a year. Department chief Rafael González traced deactivation of the pay-to-park scheme to the March 2020 announcement of emergency orders across the Spanish territory. Metred parking was restored in July, but the Consell opted to extend free-parking rather than contend with a wave of summertime renewals overlapping with peak economic activity and parking demand.

Until now, permits have been automatically renewed whether a motorist took any specific action or not. From this Monday, 1 February, the process is no longer automatic, and the renewal procedure will be mandatory for any motorist who hasn’t already completed it at some point over the last 12 months. Renewals are effective within twenty-four hours.

To cut down on face-to-face visits, the Consell encourages islanders to process permit renewals online by visiting this link and clicking on Tràmits i gestions > Llicències i permisos > Sol•licitud d’autorització / renovació d’autorització de zona blava - verda. For additional inquiries, call the Consell at 971 32 10 87.

Explained Councillor González, “During the first half of February parking attendants will prioritise educating motorists about renewals. For now the top priority is making sure permits are up to date.”
